The Scars podcast: Transforming scars into symbols of hope

I’m so excited to finally share something that’s been quietly growing in my heart and head for a long time now. The Scars is a deeply personal project about the stories behind our scars.

I’ve had scars since I was seven years old, after an accident that left lasting marks on my arms, legs and back. For a long time, I didn’t talk about them. I covered them up, I tried to forget they were there. But over the years, I’ve come to realise that these scars are not something to hide. They are reminders of survival, strength, and the messy, beautiful process of healing. And I know I’m not alone in feeling that.

I wanted to create a space where we can talk about scars, a place where we can honour the stories they hold and celebrate the resilience they represent.

In the first episode, I sit down with Dan, a cancer survivor who speaks with such honesty and humour about what it means to live with the aftermath of major surgery and illness.

Another unforgettable conversation in this series is with Mel; she’s a lawyer, a fierce advocate for young people, and a burns survivor. Mel shares her story of surviving a devastating car fire as a toddler, an incident that took her sister’s life and left her with life-changing injuries.

Mel speaks with clarity and courage about what it’s like to grow up with visible scars in a world that often doesn’t know how to respond to difference. Her strength is remarkable, but it’s her vulnerability that truly hits home.

“I became determined to prove I was more than my appearance but healing was learning that I never had to prove anything at all.”

The podcast is about the journey. And it’s about building a community where people feel seen, heard, and less alone.

Creating The Scars has been a big part of my own healing. I’ve learned so much from these conversations, and I hope that in listening, others will feel a little more able to embrace the parts of themselves they’ve struggled with too.

The first episode launched in February 2025, with new episodes released monthly on all major podcast platforms. I’d love for you to listen, subscribe, and join me on this journey.

I’ve worked with our wonderfully talented Sound Designer Micky Curling on the series; he’s really helped the stories to be told through his creativity. Nichola Cowdery created my artwork.
